Why we ask
A death notice is believed the moment it is read. Without a check, anyone could announce the death of someone who is alive, or post a notice to collect money from grieving friends. So every notice — from a family or a funeral home — waits until a person on our team has looked at both documents. Nothing is published automatically.
Proof of death
The last step before you submit a notice asks for a photograph of one of these. You cannot submit without it.
- Death certificate
- Hospital death report
- Inquirer's certificate of death
- Grama Niladhari certificate (death report)
A clear photograph from your phone is enough — JPEG, PNG, WebP or HEIC, up to 10 MB. The reference number and notes are optional. If you have something else, such as a letter from the funeral home, choose Other; it is accepted, but it can take longer to confirm.
Your identity
We also need to know who posted the notice. You do this once for your account — the next notice you post will say your identity is already verified.
From Sri Lanka
National Identity Card, passport or driving licence.
From abroad
Your passport or your country's national identity card.
Photograph the front. Add the back too if your name or number is printed there. You can send it with the notice, or later from the link we email you; the notice is not published until it is approved.
After you submit
-
1
We read both documents
Your notices list shows "Waiting for our review". It is usually done within a working day.
-
2
If something is unclear
We email you a link to send a replacement, with the reason — a blurred photograph, or a document that does not match the notice.
-
3
The notice is published
We email you to say it is live. Tributes, follows and the QR code all start working on the public page.
You can print the QR code straight away
The notice's QR code works before it is published. Anyone who scans it while we are checking is told the notice is coming shortly, and the same code opens it once it is live.
Email links for documents work for seven days and do not need you to sign in. If one has expired, sign in instead — your account shows what is still needed, with a button to send it.
Who sees your documents
Your documents are never shown on the notice or anywhere public. Location and camera details are removed from each photograph when it is uploaded.
Proof of death
You, our review team, and the funeral home if it posted the notice and has not handed it over.
Your identity document
You and our review team. Nobody else, ever.
Until a proof of death has been verified, you can remove it from the notice yourself and send a better one. Read how we handle personal information in our privacy policy .
